Introducing The Fold, the new online hub and directory for all the good people of the Aotearoa underground

In an ever growing world of digital connections, do you ever feel like we are somehow less connected than we have ever been? With Fuckerberg having roped most of us into the Metadoomscrollhellholes that we are all begrudgingly obliged to participate in and actively contribute to, it feels like somehow the underground scene is less and less functionally represented within it and many folks are doing their best to distance themselves from their feeds. These platforms have also cunningly offered a useful service for music and art scenes to try, and then essentially put in some major paywalls and crushed the algorithms for anything that isn't Taylor Swift or Loop Earplugs or Neon. It's no secret amongst promoters and anyone trying to do a cool thing that it is virtually impossible to achieve much in the way of natural reach without using some very cringe tactics to grab attention OR paying out the ass to have your content put in front of people - only to find they are allergic to being advertised to and are prone to writing off whatever it is you are trying to let them know about. We have seen it, we feel it too, and we want to try and do something about it! “Hypocrites” we hear you say, “Your bloody ads are all I see when I open my phone!” Fair… It is currently a necessary evil that we need to use to reach our audience and try to make Twisted Frequency viable. BUT it doesn’t mean we can't try and build some tools to help connect our communities and ensure they can stay afloat in increasingly uncertain times.

We’ve been toiling away in the background for the last few months working on a new project, and we’re super excited to send it out into the world - introducing The Fold, an online hub and directory for all things underground, and a way for our Twisted whānau to stay in the loop year-round.

Maybe you’re in Ōtautahi for the weekend and want to know what crews put on dubstep gigs? Or maybe, you’re a promoter planning a tour stop in Tāmaki Makaurau, and need a local photographer? Jump on The Fold and see who is out there!

We wanted to create a space where the crews, venues, labels, soundsystems, radio stations, festivals, and skilled providers and organisations that make up Aotearoa’s phenomenal underground scene can have a presence. You can search by region, genre, or keyword, or just open up a category and have a browse. You’ll probably find some boss-as underground project in your hometown you didn’t even know about - there’s soo much goodness going on around the motu, and we’re stoked to be able to connect and showcase it all.

Our outreach team have contacted as many folks as they can and asked them to input their info for a profile in The Fold. We know it’s a busy life doing rad shit, so we have yet to hear back from MANY of the awesome folk doin’ the mahi - if that is you or you can see a project/person missing in the mix, please hassle them until they are on there or get in touch and throw your hat in the ring.

Of course, so far, it’s been based on reaching out to people we know, or people they know - it’s still growing, and there’s space for so many more amazing folks to share their efforts with the masses. If you want to ask about getting listed, email us at thefold.twistedfrequency@gmail.com. We have so many other ideas for what direction we can take this new mission, for now we want to make sure it is thoroughly populated with all the legends that make up our collective underground scene <3

In the meantime, go find the means to make your next weekend awesome or your next event a banger - Welcome to The Fold <3
