Based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, New Zealand, Weka are true sonic adventurers. They draw inspiration from Bonobo, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, and Massive Attack, weaving live drums, guitar, and analog synths with pulsating bass and immersive soundscapes. Weka will take you on a journey from Downbeat and Rock, through to Techno and World inspired music. Weka’s distinctive sonic tapestry has seen them become in demand performers and sound designers throughout the globe. Weka started as a solo project, founded by Angus Woodhams. After sitting down at the piano at 6 years old, he became hooked on crafting auditory adventures. Combining an honours degree from the New Zealand School of Music with self-taught skills using samplers, synths and various software, he is at peace in his studio crafting new creations, developing interactive art installations and enjoying the adventure of creativity. After a hiatus traversing the globe and exploring other projects, in 2023, Weka reemerged as a three piece, with Ellie Jardine on guitar and Cathal Lennon on drums. Weka has performed alongside a growing list of the world’s finest musicians including Opiuo, Julia Deans, Freq Nasty, Zuke, Imon Starr, K+Lab, Tyson Smith, Kakapo and Paige Julia, at festivals such as The Performance Arcade, Newtown Festival, CubaDupa (Wellington), Twisted Frequency (Takaka) and Discombobulation (Nelson), as well as at famed Wellington venues including San Fran, Sandwiches, Bodega, Moon, Mighty Mighty, Carlucci Land and two live-to-air performances on Radio Active. As an individual artist, Angus has exhibited audiovisual installation work as part of the award winning Interrupt Collective, at festivals in Australia, Singapore and throughout New Zealand, and created soundscapes for the Guildhall in London and renowned photographer Jonathan Kay. After standout performances at CubaDupa and Newtown Festival, 2025 has seen Weka push forward with new singles due in October and a full-length release in development, along with a national festival tour planned for summer 2025/26. Come and share in Weka’s sonic ecology.
