Fucken Vote Oi!

Here's what to know about the up coming election in Aotearoa.

As we hope you all know, election day is coming up here in Aotearoa.

We’ve heard it all before: “Yeah, nah, I’m not really into politics, aye…” :/ But politics influence everything. It absolutely influences Twisted Frequency and the communities that we host, support and grow.

Step up, put in five minutes and fucken vote oi.

Enrolling to vote is seriously easy, you can enrol or update your details here.

There are some sneaky changes this year you should know about though - you CANNOT just rock up and enrol on the day! You need to be enrolled at least 13 days before election day, so by 25th October.

For all of our overseas crew, you can start voting from 21 October. You can vote online, by post or by phone. Find out more here.

The lowest demographic enrolled to vote is 18–24 year olds. As of 31 July 2026, only 53.89% were enrolled. We need to bring that number wayyyy up. The catastrophic damage this government has done, and will continue to do if they stay in power, are going to be felt by Aotearoa for decades. Don’t let them screw it up any more than they already have. “Leave politics out of festivals, it’s all about the music bruh” Nah bol. Music festivals are inherently political. The alternative scenes that we are all a part of have a crucial role to play to prevent the impending eco-pocalypse. Throughout history, communities like ours have shaped some of the most crucial policies to protect nature and human rights and although some may not like it, voting is one of the tools we have at our disposal to effect immediate change. It would be almost impossible to list the insane shit this Government has done in the last three years, but here’s some of the examples we’ll feel the most; they’ve implemented the Fast Track Approvals Act despite massive public opposition, making it easier for extractive industries to get their teeth into our whenua. They’ve further put our environment at risk of selling off conservation land and opening areas like Sams Creek to mining. They’ve cut taxes for our poor impoverished landlords, (won’t someone please think of the landlords?!) and abolished Te Aka Whai Ora in favour of continuing poor health outcomes for Māori. They’ve made massive public service and Creative New Zealand cuts, attempted to re-interpret the Treaty of Waitangi, endangered our wonderful LGBTQIA+ communities, and the list goes on.

The cost of living crisis is getting out of hand, splitting up our scenes and pushing many young creative legends overseas. Aotearoa has lost countless venues, festivals and people under this government. We cannot let them continue down this path - your input has never been more crucial to effecting the change that we desperately need.

Every single vote counts. We all need to make a massive fucking effort to make sure everyone in our communities are enrolled and gets their vote in. If your mates complain that it’s too hard, help them. Share the link. Spread awareness. Have the conversation.

Five minutes. That’s it. Get enrolled. Get voting.
