Alt Soul / Hip Hop, (NZ)
Sky Canvas are an alt soul/hiphop Wellington 5-piece. They are a dynamic blend of stirring vocals with colourful synth/guitar textures and fiery, dancing rhythms. They bring this radiant and hard-grooving energy to their live shows - delivering a gripping experience that you'll find yourself moving to. Their sound features elements of off-centre soul, hip-hop, electronic, rock and eastern-flavoured jazz.
Sky Canvas' 5-track debut EP was recorded in Wellington's Surgery Studios and released in 2017, and reached #13 on the NZ Albums chart, and #8 on the Heatseekers chart.
The band formed and started writing together while studying at the NZ School of Music. They have since played many successful shows - developing on the way a tight live set, a strong Wellington fan base, and a drive to keep making compelling music. They've opened for many great touring acts in the indie/funk/pop fields (Strangely Arousing, Balu Brigada, Albion Place, Molly & The Chromatics etc).
Katelin Little’s vocals are soulfully charged; her lyrics, delivery, and presence on stage are absorbing. Fraser Walker (keys/synth) and Sam Nakamura (guitar) create a bright backdrop of texture and harmony, while Luther Hunt (Drums) and Tyaan Singh (Bass/Sax) hold down the underlying grooves. Tyaan is also accomplished on saxophone, and switches back-and-forth between instruments - which can really get the crowd bouncing.
