Dubstep / Ragga, Jafa Mafia (ZA)
Kamal Sunker has made a name for himself as a widely known digital storyteller, multifaceted DJ and producer. Beginning his foray into the music scene over 10 years ago he began his journey into music in the bass heavy dubstep scene as a youth. Consistent with his ongoing narrative of decolonising music, he started producing Gqom, a genre unique to his homeland of South Africa. Over the last ten years he has worked to make a name for himself and has been behind bringing big music names to New Zealand including Coki, Loefah, Radikal Guru, and Mungos Hifi - playing his own unique brand of aural liberation personified as support to each one.
He has also worked towards making radio-waves, starting out on KFM as a young selector and DJ he has since played international shows in Dubai, South Africa, Australia and a plethora of festivals and gigs in New Zealand. He has since moved to Base FM where for the last three years he has hosted his own show with a strong focus on decolonising people's ears with an emphasis on bass heavy, tribal electronica and culturally oriented music from Afro-Asiatic roots.
Alongside his work as a DJ and producer he has also stepped into event management, organising shows at local Auckland hotspots such as Whammy, Cassette 9 and Neck of the Woods. A member of renowned sound system Jafa Mafia he runs his own genre diverse club nights inclusive of Grime, Dubstep and Afrobeat.
