Indie Jazz, (NZ)
HUMMUCIDE is a four-piece minimalist-rock-jazz group born out of the thriving house-party scene in Pōneke, New Zealand. While being rooted in the jazz tradition, their music also draws influence from hip-hop, electronic, and indie artists. With a huge emphasis on interaction and improvisation, they are known for their huge live sound incorporating raging synths and soaring saxophone melodies.
The band comprises of Toby Leman on saxophone (Dr. Reknaw, Revulva), Ben Stewart on keyboard and synths (Sky Canvas, Dr. Reknaw), Lennox Grootjans on drums (Spacey) and Hugo Olsen-Smith on bass (O & The Mo, Revulva). They all started out at the Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music, before traveling their own musical roads and coming back together to form the HUMMUCIDE sound.
HUMMUCIDE has quietly amassed a strong international listener-base, with their first EP gaining over 107k streams worldwide. They have been featured in publications and playlists both locally and abroad, including NZ Musician magazine, The Rust (US), 45RPM (UK), and on Spotify’s ‘Jazz Today’, ‘State of Jazz’, and ‘All New Jazz’ playlists. They have also placed highly on the Radioactive, BFM and RadioOne charts, and #1 on the SRN Top 10. Their track ‘8 Mullups’ was featured on the NZ Hot Singles Chart.
